EDUCATION in the new normal has been in the forefront. As teachers and parents alike struggle to find ways to ensure there is continuity of learning, a myriad of ways have been brainstormed – from technology, to strategies, to social media, all were factored in to achieve education goals. Despite the advancement in technology, the most significant question remains – how well the learners receive and process the modules?
The role of a teacher has expanded especially with the onset of pandemic. The teacher has become social media experts – constantly updating themselves with the latest platform that could be used in the delivery of classes. The teacher has become videographers – creating teacher-made videos with graphics that could be used by learners as an asynchronous tool in learning the lesson. The teacher has become an extension of social welfare as we immersed ourselves in ensuring that the mental, social, physical, & emotional well-being of the learner are in check.
Ensuring that quality education continues, another aspect of teaching in the new normal has become microscopic – that is developing l ocalized and contextualized material dependent on t he socioeconomic status of the learner. It has become apparent that majority of learners in the public school system, accounting to nearly 95% are unable to experience online classes. The disparity in the use of gadgets, the means to provide internet connectivity has become obvious. The economy and its impact to communities, once again, is a factor in these difficult times.
The performance of the child is contingent to the quality of teachers. It is therefore imperative that regardless of the situation – pandemic or not, teachers must be given appropriate and relevant trainings to weather all circumstances that may affect the realization of their profession. In the end, it will always be for the child’s future that should be the priority.
