CAPIZ – The province of Capiz recorded cases of dengue and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the first week of this year.

According to the Provincial Weekly Notifiable Diseases Case Bulletin released by the Capiz Provincial Health Office (PHO), there were 15 dengue cases and four COVID-19 cases as of Jan. 6.

The reported dengue cases show an 87.50 percent increase compared to the eight cases from the same period last year.

Mr. J eoffrey Espiritu, Development Management Officer IV of the Department of Health Capiz, stated that the rise in cases is attributed to the rainy weather and unclean surroundings, causing dengue-carrying mosquitoes to proliferate.

In 2023, the province reported a total of 903 dengue cases, with five fatalities from the municipalities of Ivisan, Mambusao, Panay, and Roxas City.

Meanwhile, since the pandemic hit, there have been a total of 13,993 positive cases of COVID-19. This breaks down to 13,382 recoveries, 598 deaths, and 29 active cases.

The decrease in cases is attributed to the increasing number of vaccinated individuals in the population.

Throughout the previous year as well, the Capiz PHO recorded 302 cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease, 32 cases of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, 14 cases of Adverse Events Following Immunization, and five cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis. These figures reflect the number of patients seeking medical attention at hospitals or rural health units for treatment.

The Capiz PHO continues to closely monitor these diseases./
