Philippine flag flown at half-mast at provincial government facilities

ILOILO – As a sign of mourning for the passing of former vice governor Demetro “Demy” Sonza, aged 89, the Philippine flag has been lowered to half-mast at all buildings, hospitals, and other facilities owned by the provincial government.

The flags will remain at half-mast until Sonza’s burial, according to Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

He expressed the profound impact of Sonza’s death, stating, “The passing of the Honorable Demetrio P. Sonza has left a void in the hearts of the people of Iloilo that is difficult to fill.”

Sonza’s political career included two terms as a member of the Sanggunian­g Panlalawig­an of Iloilo from 1988 to 1995, followed by three terms from 2010 to 2019.

He also served as vice governor of the province for two terms from 1995 to 2001.

Apart from his political contributi­ons, Sonza was a noted historian and author, responsibl­e for several history books, including “Sugar is Sweet: The Story of Nicholas Loney”, “Mightier than the Sword: Biography of Graciano Lopez Jaena” and “Adriano Hernandez: A Hero in War and in Peace”.

His diverse career also encompasse­d roles such as station manager of the National Civ i l Defense Administra­tion Radio Station in Iloilo from 1965 to 1970, and as Press Secretary and Executive Assistant to the Governor from 1970 to 1977.

According to informatio­n from his relatives, Sonza’s remains might be brought to the Iloilo provincial capitol on Jan. 29 and 30. This Thursday afternoon, Jan. 25, a memorial service will be held by the local government unit of Santa Barbara for Sonza, and his body will stay overnight at the Sanggunian­g Bayan Municipal Hall.

The family has not yet released additional details regarding the i nterment schedule./
