‘EXTENDING THE EXTENSION’
THE FIRST DEADLINE for the consolidation of individually-operated public utility jeepneys was Dec. 31, 2023. This was also the date nga dapat indi na makabyahe ang mga unconsolidated jeepneys.
Due to the protests of jeepney operators and drivers, the Dec. 31, 2023 deadline was extended to Jan. 31, 2024.
But again, jeepney operators and drivers protested. Thus the second deadline of Jan. 31, 2024 was further extended – sa April 30, 2024 naman.
Asta na lang ta ni pirme sa extension? Haslo!
Come April 30, 2024 basi magprotesta naman mga unconsolidated jeepney operators and drivers. Te, extension pa gid? Tarso!
While there may be valid reasons for extending deadlines in certain circumstances, consistent delays in the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program of the government can hinder the achievement of its goals.
This program is designed to improve the public transport system by making it safer, more efficient, and environmentally-friendly. Extending deadlines means delaying these improvements, which can have a direct impact on the public who rely on these services.
Consistent delays can erode public trust in the government’s ability to efficiently manage large-scale projects. This loss of confidence can have wider implications for other government initiatives and public cooperation.
Part of the modernization program often includes the introduction of more environmentally friendly vehicles. Delays in implementation can mean a prolonged period where older, more polluting vehicles remain in use, negatively impacting air quality and public health.
