Familial love behind bars: A Valentine’s Day visit

- ❙ By Ma. Theresa Ladiao

Amidst the whirl of red roses and heart-shaped everything on Valentine’s Day, there is another story of love at play. A family’s journey of steadfast love and support as they visit someone loved behind bars at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Iloilo City District Jail Male Dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro.

The Barneso family embarks on their moving journey in the busy metropolis, where it seems like time never stops. Through a labyrinth of metal gates and concrete walls, they make their way there with hearts that are sorrowful yet optimistic. Their cruise is not only physical but also emotional, as they carry a wide range of feelings, including love, longing, and a strong will to maintain their connection despite the obstacles in their way.

“Gusto ya gid magbisita ako diri kada semana kag kami man, para kuno madula man ang iya pagka-hidlaw sa amon,” Nanay Jenet said.

As families gathered inside the BJMP, hoping to see their loved ones, the atmosphere was charged with excitement. The Barneso family has become used to this routine, but the importance of each visit doesn’t diminish. They give one another soothing words and smiles while they wait their turn, finding strength in each other’s company.

“Makadto ka gid di ya, kay syempre imo bata palangga mo gid ya. Maski ano nga kabudlay, mabisita mo gid siya, makita mo man sya, para ang kahidlaw makuha man,” Nanay Jenet said that this is her expression of love for her detained son.

There is an implicit acknowledgment of the difficulties they endure as a family within the talks and shared memories. Despite the difficult reality of their son’s circumstances, the Barneso family is determined to keep their relationship intact. Rather, they decide to concentrate on the happy and meaningful events both inside and outside the BJMP walls.

“Subong suportado ko gid siya kay sa sulod, may event, Mr. Valentino Search, amo na nga ari man kami tanan,” Nanay Jenet added.

There’s a noticeable reluctance to part ways as the stay comes to an end. The Barneso family is distinguished by an underlying strength that shines through despite the final farewells and assurances of return visits. Despite their circumstances separating them, their love is unwavering.

The Barneso family views Valentine’s Day as a tribute to the enduring strength of familial love as much as a celebration of romantic love. Though their hearts are heavy, they are grateful for the days they had together and the love that gets them through even the worst of circumstances as they return home./
