Boardinghouse safety compliance

-

THE TRAGIC fire in La Paz, Iloilo City on Feb. 18, which resulted in the loss of two lives and significant property damage, underscores the critical importance of boardinghouses complying with safety standards. The blaze, which engulfed six boardinghouses lacking proper permits, including the one where two persons tragically perished, highlights a systemic failure to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. These individuals, a young call center agent and an engineering student, represent the vulnerable populations who rely on such accommodations for their livelihood and education.

The incident not only sheds light on the immediate dangers posed by non- compliant boardinghouses but also on the broader implications of inadequate regulatory oversight and enforcement. Mayor Jerry Treñas’ response, including the convening of the Boarding House Commission and the commitment to continuous inspections, is a step in the right direction. However, it also serves as a stark reminder of the need for a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to regulation and enforcement.

This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders, from property owners to regulatory bodies and local government units. The loss of lives is an irrevocable consequence of negligence and a clear indication that stringent measures are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future. Ensuring that boardinghouses meet safety standards is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative to protect the lives and safety of residents.

The provision of financial assistance to the victims’ families, while a necessary gesture of compassion, does not absolve the responsible parties from accountability. It is imperative that the root causes of such incidents are addressed through rigorous enforcement of existing regulations, such as Iloilo City’s Regulation Ordinance 2000-01, which mandates the acquisition of necessary permits and adherence to safety standards.

Moreover, the community must be engaged in a dialogue about fire safety awareness and prevention. Vigilance in the face of potential fire hazards, exacerbated by seasonal factors like El Niño, is crucial. However, it must be accompanied by accessible education and resources for residents to safeguard their homes against fire risks.

Let Sunday’s devastating fire be a catalyst for change, ensuring that such a tragedy is never repeated.
