Use water wisely

-

IN THE FACE of the El Niño phenomenon, the importance of responsible water use cannot be overstated. As the country grapples with the impacts of this climatic event, cities like Iloilo City and its neighboring municipalities are feeling the strain on their water supply. Using water responsibly is a necessary action for sustainability and survival.

El Niño, characterized by the warming of ocean temperatures in the Pacific, affects weather patterns globally, often leading to severe droughts in some areas. These conditions severely test our water management strategies and the resilience of our water supply systems. In Iloilo, where the demand for water ranges from 80 to 100 million liters per day (MLD), the reality of this challenge is evident. With current supplies from bulk water providers falling slightly short, the situation is worrisome.

MPIW’s efforts to minimize “non-revenue water”through leak repairs and the acquisition of Sahara Technology for more efficient leak detection are commendable. These steps are crucial in reducing water wastage and recovering millions of liters of water daily. However, the problem of water scarcity during El Niño cannot be solved by infrastructure improvements alone. It requires a collective effort from every individual in the community.

Reusing water from washing rice and laundry for other purposes like watering plants or cleaning is practical and embodies the principle of maximizing the use of our resources. Every drop of water saved in our homes contributes to the broader effort to manage our water supply more effectively.

The potential boost from the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project Stage II highlights ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of water shortages. But while essential, this will take time to implement and realize its full benefits. In the interim, the responsibility falls on each of us to adapt our water usage habits.

The El Niño phenomenon reminds us of our vulnerability to changing climatic conditions and the importance of water conservation. Let us reflect on our water usage patterns and adopt more sustainable practices. By doing so, we not only ensure our own water security but also contribute to the well-being of our community and the environment.

Responsible water use during periods of scarcity, such as those induced by El Niño, is about adopting a long- term perspective towards water conservation, recognizing the value of every drop, and taking actionable steps towards a more sustainable and water-secure future. Let’s make every effort to use water wisely. Our collective actions today will pave the way for a more resilient tomorrow.
