National Women’s Month

MARCH in our country is also National Women’s Month, a period dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Filipino women to society, while also advocating for their rights and addressing issues that affect them.

In Iloilo province, the provincial government’s Gender and Development (GAD) Council is spearheading the celebration via a series of events honoring women and campaigning for equality, diversity, and inclusivity.

The significance of National Women’s Month cannot be overstated. It is a reminder of the vital roles that women play in various sector, including politics, economics, culture, and family. Filipino women have historically been at the forefront of change and progress, from revolutionary heroines who fought against colonialism to the modern-day leaders in business, government, and social movements. This month honors their resilience, strength, and contributions while highlighting the ongoing struggles they face, including gender-based violence, discrimination in the workplace, and unequal access to opportunities and resources.

The Iloilo provincial government must be commended for celebrating National Women’s Month. In fact, all local government units (LGUs) should.

Being the closest tier of government to the communities, LGUs are uniquely positioned to effect tangible changes and directly address the issues affecting women at the grassroots level. Their leadership in celebrating this month can lead to more localized, impactful, and meaningful initiatives that resonate with the specific needs and contexts of their constituencies.

LGUs can harness National Women’s Month as an opportunity to launch and reinforce policies, programs, and activities aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment within their jurisdictions.

For example, by highlighting the stories of local heroines and contemporary female leaders, LGUs can inspire young girls and women to aspire to leadership positions and pursue their ambitions without the constraints of traditional gender roles. This can lead to a generational shift in perceptions about gender, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and progressive community.

National Women’s Month also aligns with international movements for women’s rights, connecting the Philippines’ efforts to global campaigns such as International Women’s Day on March 8. It’s a time for reflection, advocacy, and action, encouraging both men and women to work together towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
