SHABU AT BJMP UNGKA JAIL
AUTHORITIES in the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) facility in Barangay Ungka, Jaro, Iloilo City recovered two sachets of shabu concealed within a sock.
The sock was believed to have been lobbed into the jail from outside, most likely from behind the prison facility.
The sock also contained a lighter and a cigarette pack – they were mostly likely included to obscure the true intention of the package at a glance. Wais ang haslo!
This incident raises several critical points in the context of prison security, the ingenuity of drug traffickers, and the challenges faced by the BJMP in combating contraband.
The method of smuggling (lobbing a sock over the wall) is indicative of the lengths to which drug traffickers will go to smuggle drugs into the jail, given the stringent checks conducted by BJMP personnel at the entrance gate, which significantly hinder the easy smuggling of illegal drugs. Traffickers are continuously finding inventive ways to bypass these controls. Tonto!
This case, therefore, underscores the continuous need for the BJMP to innovate and adapt its security measures. While entrance checks are crucial, they are not a panacea for contraband smuggling. As traffickers find new methods to smuggle items into the jails, authorities must also enhance their surveillance and security protocols, not only at the entrances.
This incident may have also confirmed that there’s a demand for shabu within BJMP Ungka jail, signaling perhaps a larger issue of drug addiction in the facility. Hala!
Paging, BJMP Region 6 Director Simeon S. Dolojo, Jr., Sir. Paki- investigate naman.
