UAAP: Poyos clutch as UST turns back Adamson

MANILA – Angeline Poyos delivered the killer blows as University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses scored a 25- 18, 22- 25, 25- 15, 2826 triumph over Adamson University Lady Falcons in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball on Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Down 25- 26 late in the fourth set, Poyos drilled a powerful hit to tie the score for the last time at 26-all before she knocked down back-toback attacks to secure the win for the Golden Tigresses.

Poyos finished with 18 points, all coming from attacks, to go with 10 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions as the Golden Tigresses finished the first round of eliminatio­ns with a 7-0 win-loss slate.

Jonna Perdido added 16 points, including three pivotal points late in the fourth set to kept the Golden Tigresses alive, while Regina Jurado ended with 12 markers for the Golden Tigresses.

This was t he Golden Tigresses first 7- 0 start in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament since the Season 69 (2006-2007) where they have a 6-0 first round record and won their first game of the second round under head coach August Santamaria.

“Syempre masaya pero mahaba pa ang liga, and l uckily ‘ Lucky 7’ ‘ yung markado namin ngayong first round so malaking challenge sa amin ‘ yung paparating the second round,” said UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes.

Ishie Lalongisip led the way for the Lady Falcons with 14 points, AA Adolfo and Lucille Almonte added 12 markers apiece, while Mary Ann Nuique ended with 10 points. They dropped to 2-5.

Meanwhile, Negrense Angel Canino came alive in the fifth set as De La Salle University Lady Spikers outdueled National University Lady Bulldogs, 15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19, 15-12.
