MANILA – Galeries Tower Highrisers battled back from a set down to defeat Capital1 Solar Energy Solar Spikers, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 15- 10, in the PVL 1st All-Filipino Conference over the weekend at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

Fenela Emnas set the tone for her squad with 21 excellent sets to go with seven points to be named Player of the Game for the Highrisers, which tied the Solar Spikers with 1- 4 record.

“Syempre sobrang importante nitong first win para sa amin, dito kami makakakuha ng kumpiyansa and gumana ‘ yung plays namin,” Emnas said in a postgame interview. “Lahat kami hungry para sa panalo.”

“Pinanindigan ko lang din ‘yung pagiging leader ko inside the court. Sinabihan ako ng coaches na dapat kumalma ako kasi ako ang magle- lead dito sa team as the setter kaya kailangan mako- control ko sila,” she added.

After surviving the Solar Spikers in the fourth set, the Highrisers were blazing in the fifth set as they established a 13- 5 advantage courtesy of connections from Ilongga Roma Joy Doromal and Emnas.

The Solar Spikers, however, made their last run at 1013 on five straight points by Lourdes Clemente, but an attack by Mary Ann Esguerra and a block by Grazielle Bombita sealed the win for the Highrisers.

Meanwhile, Akari Power Chargers easily dispatched their sister team, NxLed Chameleons, 25-17, 25-19, 2520, to bolster their campaign with 2-3 win-loss slate. The Chameleons dropped to 1-4.

Michelle Cobb managed to activate her teammates as she finished with 14 excellent sets to go with three points, earning her Player of the Game honors for the Power Chargers.

“I think we bank mostly on our strength, which is block, and thankfully nag- follow through naman ‘yung attacks namin,” Cobb said in a postgame interview. “We were able to apply our plays, and hopefully magtuloy- tuloy in our next games.”

“What our team needs now is confidence, and we really need this win to boost our confidence going into our next games,” added the former De La Salle University Lady Spikers playmaker./
