Kalibo suspends face-to-face afternoon classes due to heat

KALIBO, Aklan – The local government of Kalibo suspended afternoon inperson classes in both public and private schools.

The suspension of faceto- face ( F2F) classes from preschool to senior high school will start on Monday, April 8, to April 30, 2024 due to intense heat levels being felt in the province of Aklan.

In response to high heat index, Kalibo’s Mayor Juris Sucro issued Executive Order (EO) No. 32 on Wednesday, April 3, suspending afternoon classes for the next three weeks.

“It is necessary to suspend F2F classes to safeguard learners and personnel from unnecessar­y physical dangers brought about by extreme weather disturbanc­e,” read part of the EO.

Schools are encouraged to shift from physical classes to alternativ­e learning modes or remote l earning with the assistance of learning support aides and facilitato­rs in the implementa­tion of classes across delivery modalities.

The EO further stated t hat school heads and administra­tor sat the collegiate level, including graduate schools and law school, have the discretion to cancel or suspend classes due to high heat index.

Health authoritie­s have reminded the public to take precaution­s against soaring temperatur­es – drink plenty of water, avoid coffee, tea and alcohol, and limit the amount of time spend outdoors.

Symptoms of heat-related illnesses are vomiting, sweating heavily, dizziness or light headedness, weak but fast pulse, exhaustion or fatigue, feeling of nausea, and blacking out or feeling dizzy when standing./
