T.I.P. bags two awards in DOST Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits 2015
The Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) bagged two awards in the Department of Science and Technology National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) 2015 held at the T.I.P. Quezon City campus.
The DOST RICE is an annual event that encourages public and private sector inventors and researchers to showcase their capabilities, ingenuity and creativity. The invention competition is divided into six categories, namely: Outstanding Invention (Tuklas Award), Outstanding Utility Model, Outstanding Industrial Design, Outstanding Creative Research (Likha Award), and Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for high school and college students.
A team of T.I.P. Manila Chemical Engineering students was declared as Sibol Award college level regional winners with their research entitled Prototype Development of a Flow Perfusion Taylor-Couette-Poiseuille Double Chamber Bioreactor for Tissue Engineering of Trachea.
The winning team is composed of Ralph Domondon, Ronnel Batarilan, Alvin Salmingo, Pascal Clutario, Jainie Lynne Rivera, Alexis Pulhin, Hubert Bakal, and Argie Adduru. The group's invention is designed to grow stem-cell based organ-engineered trachea to produce artificial trachea for victims of accidents or trachea-related diseases.
A team of 5th year Electronics Engineering students from T.I.P. Q.C. also took home the Sibol Award 2nd runner-up title for their Cacao Ultrasonic Testing Meter for Cacao Maturity project. The group is composed of Beverly Ampo, Kaila Manalad, Leonard Policarpio, and Jack Herbert de Vera. Their invention is an ultrasonic testing meter that provides quantitative data to help cacao experts and farmers determine if cacao pods are ready for harvesting.
This year's RICE competition received a total of 301 entries, including ten (10) Sibol Award entries from T.I.P. The regional invention event highlighted the importance of producing new ideas and inventions that are not only useful but also commercially viable.
The DOST-NCR RICE winners will compete for the Presidential Awards in the 2016 National Invention Contests and Exhibits.
