ACASIO’S NATURALIST ART DEPICTS ‘FINITE’ EARTH

- By Lester Babiera @Inq_Lifestyle

The “Finite” exhibition at Galerie Stephanie is a visual journal of Emman Acasio’s meditation on environmental issues. It is a follow-through of his first solo, “Stories from Home.” In the new show, Acacio complements his thriving images of flora and fauna with graphic images of recent natural disasters.

The title is drawn from the statement of United States biologist and ecological activist Barry Commoner, who has de- clared, “Ours is a finite earth.”

“Finite” opens with realistic images of skulls, connoting archeology and prefiguring doomsday. The skulls become centerpoints for pictorial growth and melisma through technological intervention and augmented reality. The augmented reality is a commen- tary on how people could experience the natural environment only vicariously through the virtual reality of technology.

“Finite” is a declaration on the need to go back to basics, to go back to nature.

Emman Acasio (born 1984) graduated cum laude from the University of Santo Tomas Col- lege of Fine Arts and Design. He has participated in group exhibitions in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“Finite” will run from March 2-17 at Galerie Stephanie, 4/F, East Wing of Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong.
