WORLD INDUSTRIAL DESIGN DAY TALKS AT BENILDE
Members of the World Design Organization worldwide celebrated the annual World Industrial Design Day June 29 with the theme “Designing for Everyday Life.”
The Benildean Industrial Designers, a student organization of the De La Salle-college of Saint Benilde (DLSU-CSB) School of Design and Arts, launched “World Industrial Design Week 2020: Today and Beyond,” online last June 29, to run until July 3.
The five-day event features a series of talks, workshops and exhibits that tackle various design approaches, focused on the form and function of daily products and services. The activities aim to help participants understand the process of working and designing to cope with the changing times.
“Everywhere we look and go, industrial design (ID) is there. From the smallest button or paper clip you can find, the gadgets and technology we use in our daily grind, to largescale products and systems such as cars and airplanes, all of those are made possible through industrial designers,” said Benilde industrial design program chair Romeo Catap Jr.
Discussions include “Experience Design” by Mark Meily, “Design Engineering” by Mirei Monticelli, “Game Principles to Design Products for Fun” by Yuri Zaitsev, “3D Printing” by Dennis Sandil, and “Redesigning New Spaces to the New Normal” by Karol Antonio and Lea Gatpandan. Other lectures: “Empathy in Chaotic Times by Michael Barry and Michelle Jia; “Designing Everyday Products” by Augusto Ayo; and “The application of Canva app in everyday life” by Angelo Cuyegkeng, who will share his expertise on editing and graphic design.
Henry de Guzman and Joselito Got will explain the fundamentals of Arduino, an open-source prototyping platform for building electronics projects. Plan Tancharoen will guide the participants in the different approaches they can take as designer.
Young artists can explore and enhance their skills through online workshops on Adobe Premiere Rush and Adobe XD by Rollan Bañez, Product Photography by Richardson Velasco, Adobe Spark by Gabriel Baga and Personal Branding by Sarah Medilo.
Young designers are challenged to showcase their designs for the trying times in Unravelxergocon 2020, a design competition in partnership with the Industrial Management Engineering Society, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of the Philippines and DLSU.
An interactive exhibit that highlights how sustainable materials can be transformed as possible solutions for current and future social issues will be on view at “EMOD: A Circular Future.” The event is open to the public.
