TRANSPORT STRIKE: NO CLASSES IN METRO

There will be no classes today for elementary and high school students in both public and private schools in Metro Manila, Malacañang announced on Sunday night.

Classes were suspended in the National Capital Region due to the expected massive transport strike in the metropolis and other cities, the second by jeepney groups this month.

The announcement was made by the Office of the Executive Secretary which also advised people to await word if classes in the tertiary level would also be suspended.

However, the following schools have announced the suspension of classes in the tertiary level: De La Salle University (all levels, including office work, in all campuses), University of Santo Tomas and College of St. Benilde.

Jeepney groups led by Piston, Stop and Go Coalition, and No To Jeepney Phase Out Coalition are protesting the plan of the government to phase out old jeepneys, its requirement of a P7 million minimum capital for jeepney operators and minimum of 10 units for each franchise.

Early this month, the jeepney groups also staged a strike that stranded hundreds of passengers and forced some schools to cancel classes.
