PWUdean named rapporteur of UNexperts committee
Ambassador Rosario G. Manalo was elected by acclamation recently as rapporteur of the 23-member Committee of Experts of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) during its meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. This new appointment makes Manalo the only Filipino to be elected to two of the Committee of Experts’ prestigious positions. She was its chair in 2005-2006. She will hold the position of rapporteur until 2018. Manalo was elected to the UN committee in July 2016. She completed two previous terms with the committee in 2006. In the interim 10-year period, Manalo chaired the negotiations on the charter of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and became the first Philippine representative to the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) from January 2010 to January 2016. Manalo is the dean of the Helena Z. Benitez School of Diplomacy, Philippine Women’s University, and concurrent director of the PWU Center for Gender Equality and People Empowerment.
