DLSU holds 14th Lasallian Scholarum Awards to honor PHL’s best media coverage of youth and education stories
In pursuit of its advocacy to promote the country’s youth and education sectors, De La Salle University held the 2017 Lasallian Scholarum Awards for outstanding media coverage last October 23 at De La Salle University. Now on its 14th year, the Lasallian Scholarum Awards was themed “@youthPHL.” Inspired by the "@" sign in social media handles and how they are used to identify and address individuals, it encourages the youth to use their voice and influence to help spur positive change. This year’s winners are: “Walang maiiwan” by i-Witness for Outstanding Televised Feature Story on Youth and Education; “Tokhang with children” by Manila Bulletin’s Jansen Romero for Outstanding Published Photograph on Youth and Education; “Where Vivaldi soars above the noise of dump trucks by Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Jhesset Enano, for Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a Nationally-circulated Publication; “What filmmaking did for children of war in Zamboanga” by CNN Philippines’ Regine Cabato bagged the award for Online Feature Story on Youth and Education; and “When little girls grow up to be women” by the Manila Bulletin’s Rosario Lapus garnered the award for Outstanding Published Column Article on Youth and Education in a Nationally Circulated Publication. “Patingkarin ang kulay ng ating mga katutubong wika” by The Varsitarian’s Bernadette A. Pamintuan won the Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a School Organ. The grand prize winner for Outstanding Feature Story on De La Salle University is “DLSU grad student developing iSteth, a smart lung sound alert system” by Business Mirror’s Stephanie Tumampos. This year’s panel of judges includes Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara, Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. trustee Raissa Hechanova-Posadas, University Student Government President Mikee de Vega, Yellow Boat of Hope Co-Founder Jay Jaboneta, and Al Jazeera English Senior Correspondent Margarita Ortigas. Professional media winners each received a sculpture especially designed and crafted by renowned sculptor and La Salle alumnus, Daniel Dela Cruz. Organized by DLSU’s Office for Strategic Communications, the Lasallian Scholarum Awards contracted an independent media-monitoring agency for the screening of youth and education news and features.
