RACHEL ROSE

-

Just into her 30s, Rachel Rose has experienced a meteoritic rise since winning the 2015 Frieze Artist Award and debuting at the Whitney Museum of American Art the same year with an acclaimed show. She is known for dreamlike video works underscored by unnerving messages and compelling ideas (mortality, global warming, history, technology)—visually poetic montages that she makes by layering film, collage and found footage. Lake Valley, on view at the Central Pavilion, continues such approach. The story of a furry creature trying to find a friend in a spooky dream forest, the video is made up of composited images taken from 19th-century children’s books, which Rose has layered over with cel animation, done by hand—a process that required 12 handdrawn frames per second. The result is an enchanting, multi-sensory work exploring the borders between selfdevelopmet and adulthood.
