Far from being just quite rubbish, loneliness can trigger changes in your body that may lead to serious illnesses. That’s the word from the Universities of Chicago and California, who jointly found last year that even perceived loneliness causes “fight or flight” stress signals that can affect white blood cell production and increase inflammation—dangerously lowering a lonely person’s immune system.
