Tackling Numerical Difficulties in Philippine Elementary Schools: Advocating for Change

- By: RELANIE B. JONGCO

The PISA 2018 International Report revealed a concerning trend regarding the numeracy abilities of Filipino high school students, who scored notably lower than the OECD average. This emphasizes the critical need to evaluate the effectiveness of current educational practices in promoting mathematical literacy among Filipino youth.

In our school, we face similar challenges to the national average, with students struggling to achieve proficiency in mathematical literacy. Despite educators’ dedication, numerous obstacles persist. The curriculum often lacks practical applications, leading to student disengagement. Additionally, scarce resources, including quality textbooks and modern teaching aids, worsen the situation.

Visualizing abstract concepts poses a significant challenge due to the lack of resources in typical mathematics classrooms. Teachers often rely solely on traditional methods, hindering both educators and students. Therefore, investing in modern teaching materials is crucial to enrich the learning experience.

Another issue arises from students’ struggle to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations. An overemphasis on rote memorization and formulaic approaches leaves students ill-equipped to tackle everyday challenges requiring critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

To address these challenges, a fundamental reassessment and reform of the current approach to mathematics education in Filipino secondary schools are imperative. Prioritizing a curriculum that emphasizes interactivity and real-world application, alongside investments in modern teaching tools, can significantly enhance students’ numeracy skills.

Teachers play a crucial role in facilitating students’ mathematical learning. By incorporating more interactive teaching methods, such as group activities and problem-solving tasks, educators can make learning more engaging and help students grasp abstract concepts more effectively. Moreover, integrating practical applications of mathematics into the curriculum and leveraging technology can further enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of the subject’s relevance while bridging resource gaps.*
