Yaranon laid to rest

-

FORMER Mayor Braulio Yaranon was laid to rest on a rainy Monday morning in the simplest of rites, reflecting the character by which the beloved leader lived.

Yaranon who holds the distinction of being

the oldest mayor to be elected in Baguioat age 77 and was fondly called “Lolo Mayor,” was known to be a stickler for rules and advocated simple living.

Traditional honors at the city’s seat of power were foregone as the family of the patriarch honored his life silently.

Lolo Mayor’s funeral cortege left the La Funeraria Paz where he was interred for seven days, the procession stopped briefly at City Hall where flags were put at half mast to honor him before proceeding to the Cathedral for the final mass.

Councilor Maylen Yaranon, who was voted into office with the same platforms of her father, thanked the public who condoled with the family.

Maylen said it was an uphill battle for her father since he took his oath as mayor in 2004 but left with her the love for public service and unending zeal to fight corruption in all its forms.

Lolo Mayor was laid to rest at the family moseleo at the Baguio City Cemetery.

Lolo Mayor was elected into office in a historic fight with incumbent Mayor Bernardo Vergara in one of the most emotional elections the city has known.

Lolo Mayor will be remembered to be an advocate for good governance and eradicating what he described as an “institutionalized graft and corruption” at City Hall. Maria Elena Catajan
