Kias landslide kills 1, injures 2
A LANDSLIDE at Kias took the life of 39 year old Jemma Mendoza and injured her son Lenary and nephew, Nathaniel.
The landslide buried the home of the family as rescue groups rushed to the scene to help, Police reported on the afternoon of May 24, Thursday, an erosion occurred in Block 34, Lot 14, Pinesville Subdivision where a riprap collapsed hitting the house.
The riprap wall is owned by the neighbouring site with an ongoing constriction, the Baguio City Police Office has an
ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.
Mendoza’s body was retrieved by members of the Baguio Fire Station, Philippine National Police Station 4, and volunteer group Rescue 911 On-Call but was decalred declared dead on arrival when they reached the Baguio General Hospital.
First responders rushed the all victims to the BGH-MC for medical treatment.
Mayor Maurico Domogan said the police investigation will be awaited for the Kias landslide and assured a checking of building and construction permits will be done.
The mayor called on the contractors undertaking road improvement projects in the city to ensure that safety measures are always in place to avoid any danger and inconvenience to the public.
He said he asked the city engineering office and the Baguio City District Engineering Office to make sure that contractors provide at all times safety warning signs, flag men to help in ensuring smooth traffic flow and most importantly to follow their time table.
Domogan has also ordered a cleanup of drainages and inspection of the City Camp Lagoon as the onset of the rainy season begins.
The chief executive said a cleanup is needed in all canals of the city to avoid the problem of flooding once stringer rains begin to befall the Summer Capital.
Domogan reminded the public to be careful in during the onset of the rainy season and take necessary precautions.
Domogan urged residents in the city to strictly observe waste disposal rules to avoid contributing to the city’s flooding problem especially at the City Camp basin. Maria Elena Catajan with a report from the PIO
