Remote Abra school equipped with electronic digital library

-

TINEG, Abra -Information is the lifeline of the society. Without access to information and exposure to advanced studies, chances of development can become limited.

The Department of Science and Technology-Abra (DOST) reached Tineg National High School (TNHS) one of the most remote schools in the province located in Brgy. Agsimao in Tineg to give them STARBOOKS kiosk, an electronic digital library (e-Library) that can be used by the teachers and students in their class.

“Everything they need to learn is programmed in the STARBOOKS. Even without the internet they can access information on any interactive course wares including math, all fields of sciences like physics, chemistry and biology, audio visuals and edu- cational videos,” said DOST Provincial Director Menandro Buenafe who personally turned over the kiosk to Mayor Corinthia Crisologo accompanied by some teachers and students of said school.

Information in the kiosk also includes disaster preparedness and mitigation materials, researches, ebooks, journals, articles, publications, audio visual presentations and others, he added.

Since there is no electricity in Agsimao, the STARBOOKS kiosk is powered by two solar panels which the DOST provided.

“The purpose of STARBOOKS is to equip remote schools without electricity, internet and any means of access to information,” Buenafe said.

TNHS is the second school in Abra to have this STARBOOKS

kiosk, the first one is Caganayan National High School, also in Tineg. Three other kiosks are located in Pilar, Department of Education Division Office and DOST office.

DOST- Abra conducted hands-on training for some teachers and students for the operation of the e-Library. Some of the students are first timers to operate any type of computer. Ginalyn Brioso/PIA – CAR
