SSES celebrates 2017 Nutrition Month
NUTRITION Month is a yearly campaign held every July to create awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos. This is based on PD.NO. 491 dated June 1974.
Solomon Solano Elementary School, in consonance with the campaign celebrated its school nutrition month on July 14, 2017. Teachers featured this year’s theme “Healthy Diet, gawing Habit…FOR LIFE” with pictorials and other related messages on the school bulletin board and integrated it in their lessons. The school conducted a culminating activity where in PTA officers and members, Barangay Officials, Barangay Health Workers and Nutrition Scholars were enjoined including the School Nurse who gave the gist of the program during her talk.
Highlights of the program were demonstrated by the pupils through their presentations, poster making contest, spelling and quiz bee that centered all on the theme. Another is the beautiful and very creative display of various agricultural products from the locality such as fruits, vegetables, cereals and root crops. This was also included in the contest of which the invited BHW, BNS and one Barangay official served as the judges.
In addition, Nurse Liza P. Dimbanan, the invited speaker explained the aim of this year’s theme that is to increase discernment on the importance of healthy diet which protects against both under- and over nutrition and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses and certain types of cancer. Likewise, she expounded DepEd Order No.13, s.2017 which is the Policy and Guidelines on Healthy Food and Beverage Choices in Schools and in DepEd Offices that made parents understand on how to categorize foods and drinks and were given guidance in the preparation and selling of such in school.
On the other hand, Brgy.Kag.Gloria Compas installed the newly-elected set of PTA officers for School Year 2017-2018. She reiterated in her short talk the important role of PTA officers as direct stakeholders and as partners with the school in the education of children.
Meanwhile, Janwyne Cayat, a Grade 6 pupil in the school emerged as the Federation President of the School Pupil Government among the 19 schools of Itogon District II during the election of SPG Federation Officers. The selection of the SPG Federation Officers at the District Office and the School Nutrition Program were conducted simultaneously.
