Leveled up volleyball camp resumes

THE ABCAMP volleyball clinics resumed with 17 students trying to learn more skills at the Lourdes Subd. Ext. covered court Wednesday, a five day skill training for high school students conducted by former University of the Cordilleras Lady Jaguars alumni.

UC High School Junior Jaguars coach Sherry Anne Floresca said the five day clinic will be a much intensive teaching where participants will be given tips and drills that will surely improve their volleyball know how.

The culmination will be a three day tutelage under former UC coach Yul Benosa, architect of UC’s sixpeat romp in the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League women’s volleyball competition from 2005-2010 aside from five titles for the men’s side.

Benosa, who leads the officiating for the Philippine Volleyball Federation that oversaw the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and National College Athletic Association of the Philippines volleyball competition and trainings arrived early Friday to oversee the trainings.

He was joined by two of his top guns, Cindy Benitez and Michelle Remo, in another reunion of sorts for the best BBEAL team of the early 2000s which technically bested a star studded Ateneo side in the 2008 National Inter-Collegiate Championship finals.

Floresca, however, will not be able to join them as her Junior Jaguars will be in Angeles, Pampanga for the Shakey’s Junior Volleyball Championship where they are among the 10 competing teams from

Northern, Central and National Capital Region.

“It is an opportunity hard to pass by for the girls,” said Floresca as she hurriedly formed a team the other week and get the city’s backing. Ten of her wards are in the Baguio squad along with a Baguio City High School player and University of Baguio’s Mary Anne Atuban, who was born in 1999, the cut-off.

Floresca said a level three trainings is in the works, noting that many of the participants are incoming grade seven and ripe to be trained. Many of them are actually from UC and she said that they will be soon recruited to replace her most senior players, who are on their last year.

“I am confident we will be able get young and potential players and they are so young,” said Benosa’s former libero, who played during the middle part of the UC dynasty and left after she earned her degree in education major in math.

Floresca helped brainchild the ABCamp, an offering of her team, which has been successful the past year with their winnings, to return their blessing through grass root training.

ABC is basics, which means the fundamentals which many players even in the college level lack. “It is better to start them young and avoid the pitfalls of its lack when they grow older. Mahirap ng palitan pag matanda na,” said Floresca. PR
