Cordillera forest covers increasing

THE CONTINUING government reforestat­ion activities have resulted to increased forest cover in the Cordillera Administra­tive Region.

Baguio City Mayor and Cordillera Regional Developmen­t Council (RDC-CAR) chair Mauricio Domogan, in his recent State of the Region report, highlighte­d the increase of forest cover in the region for the six years totaling to 101,687 hectares.

Domogan also noted the 86 percent average survival rate of trees planted which exceeded the 85 percent survival rate prescribed by Department of Environmen­t and Natural Resources central office.

To date, a total of 174,056 hectares of reforested areas in the region according to Environmen­tal Management Bureau-Cordillera Administra­tive Region Regional Director Reynaldo Digamo.

The DENR is implementi­ng this year the expanded National Greening Program in 2017 which aims to cover unproducti­ve and denuded forest lands to be utilized for production and protection purposes and to enhance private sector, local government unit and community participat­ion in sustainabl­e forest management and protection.

This is in accordance with the updated Philippine Master Plan for Forestry Developmen­t (2016-2028). Joseph Zambrano/ PIA – CAR
