Serious public health problem: Bullying

-

TODAY’S generation can be quite inconsiderate of others feelings. One example of this is the serious issue of bullying. Bullying is a very serious concern that needs everyone to be aware of. It’s a public health problem that youth today are facing and this is very rampant in school, homes and workplace.

Bullying by definition is an undesirable, aggressive conduct that includes a real or perceived power imbalance and the behavior is being or has been repeated over a period of time. Different types of bullying can be experienced by children and even adults today, for example is physical bullying which includes hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging property, second is verbal bullying which includes name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation and verbal abuse, third is social bullying which is best describe as taking behind someone’s back and ruining his/her reputation, spreading rumors and even playing nasty jokes to humiliate them, and the last type is cyber bullying that takes place only in the internet especially in social media which includes nasty comments or text that can humiliate the bullied person.

Once a person experienced these types of bullying, he/she can feel depression and anxiety that can lead to more serious damage, suicide. Students’ rate of suicidal over the country has risen and this should raise awareness of the growing concern of the violence that children and youth are dealing today. Suicide can be the last resort of a bullied person when feeling down every time bullies we’re abusing him/her physically or verbally.

Humanity had failed us. Children these days are expose to the bitter reality of life which our world today had change a lot comparing it from the past. Due to continues progress of the internet, children were very prone in seeing and watching the violence and abusive acts that they can learn to harm others. We, parents, should be more aware of this. Let us together be more aware of our child’s behavior especially inside our homes.

Bullying needs to be stop. In order to achieve it is to start with us. Change starts within ourselves! By just being considerate to others and being aware of what we say or act that might hurt others. To my fellow parent, by just being aware to your children’s behavior, we can prevent more serious damage if ever they had experienced such traumatizing act of bullying.
