Ex- drug users to top bill first 'Boxing at the Park'

-

WHILE drug users in other parts of the country are being killed, in Baguio City, they are given a new lease in life.

Seven drug surrenderees are now ready to embrace a new beginning as they gear up for a boxing tournament organized by the Baguio City Police Office.

The event dubbed “Boxing at the Park: Laban para sa Pagbabago” will feature amateur bouts that will be top billed by drug surrenderees from the different police stations in the city set on September 2 at the People’s Park.

BCPO city director Senior/Supt. Ramil Saculles said the event is their way of helping surrenderees turn into a better and more productive members of the society.

“This could be their ticket in becoming professional boxers someday and hopefully turn their back against drugs,” Saculles added saying the over-all winner in the box-off will have a chance to turn and train as a professional boxer.

After close to 34 drug surrenderees joined the initial training last month, only seven will see action next week.

Saculles said he hopes to duplicate another boxing tournament in the future to entice more drug surrenderees in taking-up the sports.

Coach Tarjhon Mero meanwhile said he sees a bright future among the seven drug surenderees who have consistently joined the afternoon skirmishes.

“These seven are always present in our practice that’s why they were included in the fight card. It would be hard if we include those who are not even joining the workout,” added Mero. Roderick Osis
