Suckers all in Mayweather vs McGregor

- AL MENDOZA

WE laughed. We booed. We treated it with derision. But now that it’s here, what can we do? Do we have a choice? It is on tomorrow, this crossover thing of a fight (farce?) between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor.

Mayweather is an undefeated boxer of 50 or so fights, the best there is in his division in almost the last quarter of a century.

He has fought the toughest and the brightest and has beaten them all, including our very own version of a boxing superman in Manny Pacquiao.

He has retired several times. But here he is again, ready to strut his wares anew if only to prove he can still waltz his way into that familiar nimble victory steps.

Never mind if Mayweather is going to reprise his old magic against someone straying into unfamiliar territory.

McGregor is not a boxer but a martial arts machine.

He may yet be the exact copycat of Mayweather in another discipline, but McGregor succeeding to pin down the most slippery prey alive would seem next to impossible.

Perhaps, because Mayweather is nearing 40, the legend’s footwork could now be slowed down by Father Time? That’d be a strong possibility. As proven time and again, knees always go first before the mind.

Remember the adage, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak?”

And so, Mayweather might be vulnerable— finally?

McGregor is in his prime, the best you could ever imagine in his chosen sport of punching, kicking, and wrestling an opponent down.

But, alas, McGregor could use but only one weapon tomorrow: His firsts.

His feet, knees, arms, and even his head are taboo.

It is all boxing, a condition Mayweather had imposed or there would be no fight. When kings speak, their word is the law. Why McGregor had bowed down to Mayweather’s law, it is not difficult to comprehend: Money.

If Money is Mayweather’s middle name, same with McGregor.

As Elvis Presley sang it, “One for the money, two for the show…”

Most people do it for the money. Isn’t Mayweather alone guaranteed at least $100 million?

So, for us, there is but one question: Take the fight or leave it?

Against crooks like Mayweather, do we have a choice? Might as well bite the bullet. We are all suckers here, you know.
