Kalinga launches search for homegrown scientists
TABUK CITY, Kalinga— The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) personnel with the national and outstanding young scientists are in the province in search for homegrown scientists in any field of science and technology.
They are also here to roll out the services of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and to encourage local trailblazers in science research and development.
NAST PHL Director Luningning SamaritaDomingo earlier oriented participants on NAST, which is the country’s highest advisory body to the government and the science community on matters related to S & T. It is mandated to recognize outstanding achievements in S & T made by Filipino scientists in all fields of science.
NAST recognizes outstanding achievements in science and technology as well as provide meaningful incentives to those engaged in scientific and technological researches; advises the President and the Cabinet on matters related to S &T; engages in projects and programs designed to recognize outstanding achievements in science and promote scientific productivity, and embarks on programs traditionally expected of an academy of science.
The Order of National Scientist is the highest honor given by the President of the Republic to a Filipino man or woman of science in the Philippines who has made significant contributions in one of the different fields of science and technology. Benefits and privileges include cash award during conferment ceremony, lifetime monthly stipend, medical/hospitalization benefits, and state funeral.
Outstanding Young Scientists Awards are given to young Filipino scientists (must not be 41 years old within January to December in the year of the award) who have made significant contributions to S&T. Incentives include cash prize of P125,000, NAST trophy, and research grant worth P500,000 from DOST for an approved proposal.
The World Academy
of Sciences (TWAS) award is given to an outstanding Filipino scientist (must not be 41 years old within the year of the award) for the advancement of science in developing countries. One award each year, consisting of US $2,000 and a plaque, is given in the selected discipline for the year – Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics.
For 2017, the TWAS Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines will be given for Physics. Except for the cash prize of $2,000, other incentives are similar with Outstanding Young Scientist Awards.
NAST Environmental Science Award recognizes outstanding scientific and technological research works that contribute to environmental protection and conservation.
Awardee gets cash prize of P100,000 from NAST, NAST Plaque, Research grant worth P1,000,000 from DOST for an approved proposal, and additional cash prize of P50,000 from the Department of Environment and Natural resources.
NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists aims to encourage young people (must be 35 years old or younger within the year of the award) to pursue a career in science. First prize - P 40,000; second prize – P30,000; third prize – P20,000 and NAST plaque.
NAST Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine aims to honor outstanding research contributions in the field of tropical medicine and recognize the role of scientific research in the country’s development. Cash prize of P100,000 and NAST Plaque will be given to winners.
DOST Cordillera regional director Victor Mariano said P43 million is allotted for this intervention program on the transfer of technology and application of ripe research. He urged participants to engage in coffee research and control of soil erosion among others since these areas needs S & T back-up. Peter Balocnit/PIA – CAR
