City to set guidelines on night market sanitation

THE Baguio City Market Authority (BCMA) recently banned cooking at the entire stretch of the night market because of some violations on cleanliness and sanitation of the food vendors.

According to market, trade and commerce and agriculture chair councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr., the violations of the food vendors from the night market have long been pointed out by the BCMA, still, food vendors remained to be careless and continue to do unsanitary practices.

Because of this, food vendors were not allowed to cook in the area.

With the meeting of the night market food vendors with mayor Mauricio Domogan and the health services office, the latter will draft guidelines for the food vendors to comply with.

“We want to give you (food vendors) livelihood but we also expect you (food vendors) to cooperate and comply with the sanitation requirements of the city,” stressed Domogan.

“Don’t feel bad if there will be sanitary inspectors who will check your area because the city wants to protect the health safety of the people,” added the mayor.

The city government here is looking to improve the area for convenience and safety of all vendors and the public as the night market along Harrison Road continues to gain popularity among domestic and foreign tourists.

The night market operation is generating some P1.5 million monthly income for the local government. Jho Arranz
