- Lauren Alimondo Sun*Star Baguio

ONLY one town in the Cordillera Administrative Region is without a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar.

Regional Director Dr. Victor Mariano said DOST targets to have at least one scholar in every town region and is hoping Lacub town in Abra will qualify.

“We are in coordination to the Mayor of Lacub and the Department of Education to have at least one scholar in Abra,” said Mariano.

There are ten applicants from Abra this year and Mariano hopes to fill the slots to complete the target to have scholars for each of the Cordi towns.

DOST has three existing undergraduate scholarship programs which is the RA 7687 Science and Technology Scholarship, DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program, and the Science and Technology Scholarships for Sophomore College Students.

Exams for this year is slated October 15 where 1,357 scholar applicants are set to take undergraduate examinations, the scholarships are awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to

pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.

Increasing applicants were noted from 1,100 past year there had been transcend to 1,357 applications for 2017.

Prior to the start of the application, DOSTScience Education Institute had been conducting provincial caravans in all the municipalities in region, the caravan is a scholarship campaign program of DOST.

Assistant regional director for technical services Dr. Nancy Bantog said with the competitive stage in the program there is no equal distribution of scholarships in all provinces in the region.

“It all depends on the garnered score of applicants in the results of the examination. To increase qualifiers we also do reviews,” added Bantog.

Earlier reviews in preparation for the upcoming examinations had been conducted for free in the different provinces.
