LAKE TOBA’s SAMOSIR ISLAND in North Part 2 Sumatra

-

ASSEAN JCI Senator Parlin Purba lent us his car and driver for a day trip to LAKE TOBA’s SAMOSIR ISLAND. Our journey started in MEDAN, the capital city of North Sumatra, best known as the gateway to the famous lake, which is approximately a 4-hr drive from the city. At 906-m above sea level, it is the largest volcanic lagoon in the world, large enough to have its own island (SAMOSIR) at its center, almost the size of Singapore! LAKE TOBA is the homeland of the indigenous Batak people who have played such a significant role in the cultural heritage of North Sumatra. The landmass is a short 45-min ferry ride away from Tigaras Port on the mainland.

Once on SAMOSIR, we headed to TOMOK VILLAGE, the place known for its preservation of Batak cultural heritage. Local handicrafts can be bought in the settlement, a traditional pleasant town and worth a visit for its beautiful houses and ancient tombs of the Sidabutar Kings. It was interesting to see the burial place which have fascinating carvings on them, but the site is very little and can be seen in just a couple of minutes. Note that there are many souvenir stands on the way to the crypts, as well as several paths that go in other directions. Fortunately, we had a guide who brought us straight to the graves.

The ancient tombs of King Siallagan, along with an old open-air court and execution ground (Stone Chairs) where convicted criminals were tortured and killed are found in AMBARITA VILLAGE. Fortunately, history does not repeat the chilling stories of the execution which took place from the pre-Christian era. Again, be prepared for many shopkeepers trying to catch your attention as you exit through the small shops.

As you travel around the island you can observe everyday life – farmers ploughing their fields, children playing with puppies, skilled woodcarvers and weavers at work – with the stunning scenery as a backdrop. SAMOSIR is the perfect location for a stress-free holiday in a gorgeous highland setting among the friendly Batak people. The cool air, laid back pace of life and absence of crowds form a welcome respite from the heat and commotion normally encountered in Indonesia. Above all, enjoy the relaxed pace of life and the beautiful landscape that surrounds you in every turn.
