ASSOCIATION of Barangay CouncilBaguio president Michael Lawana wants to create a healthy market for all.

Lawana said the concept of a market day for organic and healthy food is being discussed in the city council to make room for the 128 barangay to showcase their products and produces.

The alderman said the city has limited market outlets for organic products and produce from which the general public can access and purchase from.

Lawana said the Igorot Park is seen as the venue for the first market day of the city if the law is approved.

“There are a lot of growers in the city of organic vegetables and a lot more making healthy food choices and a market day for all of these will be good.”

Lawana said the proposed market day will find a space to showcase products regularly to bring in more healthy food choices and give additional income to local sellers.

Lawana has filed the proposed market day law in the council saying “Making healthy food choices, staying physically active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are essential to good health, how our food is grown or raised can have a major impact on our mental and emotional health as well as the environment.”

In the city, backyard gardens and healthy eating have seen an increase

The tilt was a brainchild of Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. who spearheaded the search spanning 25 villages entering the tilt, aiming to promote backyard gardening as a means of augmenting food production and of strengthening environmental and solid waste management programs.

He said the other purposes of the program are on the production of medicinal plants as well as preservation of biodiversity of traditional plant varieties, community education was also given to raise the level of creativity of Baguio residents on the use of urban space for food production and value of quality food including technical assistance to ensure the productivity and diversity with appropriate technology.
