Taming the tongue

-

WE have heard from the news before that our President Rodrigo Duterte his personal encounter with God regarding the epithets we always hear from him. On his way home from his visit to Japan, God spoke to him that if he does not stop epithets, He will bring down the plane the President is riding on. In Proverbs 18:21, it is written that death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruits. God is no respecter of any person, even the rulers of the nations are under Him and it is important the rulers abide in Him. His Words are true and alive.

The Bible has a lot to say regarding the taming of the tongue and what our tongues or languages bring forth. We are warned of the dangers of an untamed tongue. “So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell” (James 3:5-6, ESV) Furthermore, in Proverbs 10:31 says that, “The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.” Another is in Proverbs 15:4 saying that, “A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit”. Psalms 37:30 “The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice”. There are a lot that we could learn from the Scriptures about controlling and subduing our tongue so that we could experience an abundant life here on earth.

How do profane words come out from our mouth? Garbage in, garbage out. What we take in is important because it will determine what we say - the movies we

watch, the music we hear, the books that we read and the people we listen to. If we are surrounded by filthy things, then we expect filthy things coming out. But if we take in wisdom, pleasant music, sound advice, and Words from God, out of our mouths will come forth rivers of living water that will edify, build up, reform, revive and restore.

There is power in our tongue so whatever we say, it will become. Just as we are created in the image and likeness of God, every word we utter has corresponding effect. When God said, “Let there be light!” and there was light, it illustrates that what we say in the now, the present ‘be’, is already done as in the past ‘was’. Every release of words from our mouth has the power to change atmospheres and bring forth life. We must then be careful with the words we utter, but better yet, let truth, good words and tidings, and life spring forth from our mouths and hearts, for out of the abundance of our hearts, the mouth speak.

Just like the President, let us ask God to deliver us from lying lips, deceitful tongue and profane language. Not by might, not by power, but by the Spirit of the Living God.

ness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God, once you had not received mercy, now you have received mercy.

It is unfortunate that our people remain to be passive when government does not perform its duty to serve the people, when corrupt officials continue in their ways and not held accountable of their evil deeds hiding behind the cloak of government anonymity and authority.

It is unfortunate, that this Baguio City council will vote a non-objection to e-gambling in the city of Baguio. Ignoring to explain or deny amidst rumors of grease money from liaison people of the Maharlika Bingo, even when someone identified a neophyte councilor who has invited his colleagues to meet with the owner of the gambling hell to solicit their votes. And most of all, taking for granted and laughing at the protest raised by the religious and the academe.

It is time to renew our covenant to God, do well and shun evil, but we seek our leaders to lead our people to goodness.
