A three-day District Training-Workshop for Kinder to Grade 5 Teachers on Contextualizing the Curriculum for Indigenous Peoples Education (IPEd), was conducted at Dap-ayan Hall, Ampusongan, Bakun, Benguet on October 21-22, 28, 2017. This was attended by 67 participants.
The first day was started by an encouragement from the mother of the district, Dr. Molly M. Ablaza followed by the over view on IKSP (Indigenous, Knowledge, Skills and Practices) by the District IPEd Coordinator and at the same time the chairman of the training, Ma’am Noeme M. Balangeg. Mr. Feler Domyong continued the discussion on the legal basis of Contextualization and differentiated localization from indigenization. The Stages of Life and the Human Life Cycle Standards was skillfully discussed by Mrs. Christina F. Fongafong. Workshop and presentation of outputs busied the participants in the afternoon. The inputs from the IP elders and from Ma’am Noeme M. Balangeg made the discussion during the first day more meaningful and fruitful.
The first half of the second day was filled with workshops in identifying the practice, ritual and belief from the phases of community activities then classifying them into knowledge, conscience and practice then formulation of the community competency. These topics were expertly facilitated by Mrs. Lilia B. Saguibal after her lecture. Whereas, the afternoon session was tackled by Mrs. Eillen C. Ognaden and Mrs. Anecita Pascaden on interfacing community competency to the national competency then a workshop followed.
Mrs. Dolores G. Fidel started the third day with her topic on the formulation of Indigenized Lesson Objective (ILO) followed by the making of indigenized lesson plan in the different subjects. With the help of the school heads, the lesson plans presented were critiqued and improved. Finally, the demonstration lesson of Mrs. Eillen Ognaden on the contextualized lesson summed up the discussions for the day.
The outputs and active participation of the participants from the start until the third day were an excellent indicator that the seminar successfully achieved its objectives.
The closing was concluded by the inspirational message of the district supervisor Dr. Molly Ablaza and the challenge of Ma’am Noeme M. Balageg to all the participants. According to her, given our chance to indigenized our lessons, we should make the best out of it, to makelearning more meaningful to our learners. Dolores G. Fidel
