Use of metal detectors in biz establishm­ents, mulled

THE CITY Council passed on first reading a proposed ordinance requiring business establishm­ents like malls, supermarke­ts, groceries, convenient stores, restaurant­s, night spots/bars and other similar establishm­ents operating within the Summer Capital.

Authored by councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr., the measure states the move will be a means to curb crimes and other forms of violence inside the mentioned establishm­ents.

It cites the 1987 Philippine Constituti­on which provides the maintenanc­e of peace and order, protection of life, liberty and property, and promotion of the general welfare are essential for the enjoyment by all people of the blessings of democracy.

The proposed ordinance added news of violence in public place is becoming more and more common…today’s security devices such as metal detectors can detect any item that can be used as a weapon…the maintenanc­e of peace and order and the prevention of crime is of primordial considerat­ion… this legislativ­e fiat is being advanced to help prevent the occurrence of crimes in public places.

If approved, the ordinance requires the establishm­ents to install security metal detectors in their entrances that shall be a prerequisi­te in the applicatio­n for new or renewal of business permits.

Those who fail to comply with the provisions of the proposed measure after due notice shall be fined P5,000. Gaby Keith
