DPWH urged to speed up Baguio road projects
BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan reiterated his request to the Department of Public works and Highways – Baguio City District Engineering Office (BCDEO) to finish the agency's ongoing road projects in the city.
This to avoid inconvenience to the public in the upcoming celebration of the city's famous Baguio Flower Festival, also known as Panagbenga.
Like in previous years, the city government has lined up various street programs for the 23rd year of celebrating the monthlong festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands of foreign and local tourists yearly.
Domogan met with DPWH-BCDEO officials Tuesday to remind the department to make sure that the on-going diggings along national roads will be completed before the grand street dance parade on February 24 and grand float parade on February 25. This is to allow residents and visitors to freely roam around the city during the festivities.
The mayor asked the DPWH if the contractors of the on-going projects would be unable to finish their diggings a few days before the flower festival high-
lights, the areas should at least be cleared of debris that poses a serious threat to the public’s safety.
“We need to make sure that the major causes of traffic congestions, like the diggings being done along our national roads, will be minimized during the flower festival major events so that the public will have the chance to enjoy the festival,” Domogan said.
Domogan added while local officials understood the need for the agency and the contractors to implement their projects during the dry months, it was important to be mindful of the convenience of the public by making sure that diggings would not affect the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of the people.
The mayor added technical personnel must ensure that the implementation of all on-going infrastructure projects strictly adheres to prescribed specifications and standards.
Domogan is thankful to the DPWHBCDEO officials and contractors, though, for implementing the infrastructure projects that will ultimately benefit the city.
But he also asked them to ensure that signages were installed to guide the public and to serve as information to motorists.
