Lady Cardinals downs winless Lady Warriors
DEFENDING champion University of Baguio Lady Cardinals showed its might against a listless Pines City Colleges to stay unbeaten in women’s volleyball of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League season 30.
The Lady Cardinals needed less than an hour to dispose the hapless Lady Warriors in three straight sets, 25 – 9, 25-15, 25 -12 at the Kings College Gymnasium Sunday afternoon to record their third straight win in as many games.
Hyacinth Jane Aquino and Mary Ann Attuban showed the way for the undefeated back to back titlists leading the Lady Cardinals in the first set, outscoring the Lady Warriors 20-4 after a 55 count.
Although it was an easy win for the Lady Cardinals, coach Jhiesel Agudia said the team has yet to reach its top form as they seek a grand slam even with the departure of its top three players.
“Kelangan lang siguro maging maganda yung kondisyon ng team lalo pag natapos na yung first round,” said Agudia.
Agudia added even without setter Cherry Ann Attuban, middle blocker Nicole Guyguyon and open spiker Carmela Dicksen, the Lady Cardinals can still hold their own against some of the top teams in the league.
“Kaya pa rin nilang makipagsabayan although medyo bumagal lang yung laro nila,” added Agudia saying the real test for the team will be their marquee match – up against erstwhile rival University of the Cordilleras whom they faced in season 28 and season 29.
Agudia added aside from UC Lady Jaguars and season 27 champion Saint Louis University Lady Navigators, she believes they are set to face a tough challenge against an improved Baguio College of Technology Lady Atoms who has already scored back to back wins in the tournament against the PCC and season host Kings College of the Philippines Lady Tigers.
“Siguro yung laban against BCT ang magiging challenge sa amin considering na nag mature na yung mga players nila and at the same time halos lahat sa kanila eh veteran na,” added Agudia.
BCT and UB are
bracketed with season host Kings College, Cordillera Career Development College and PCC while SLU and UC are bracketed with University of the Philippines – Baguio, Baguio Central University, Benguet State University and Philippine Military Academy. Roderick Osis
