14 institutio­ns received ‘Starbooks’

FOURTEEN institutio­ns in Benguet province were the latest recipient of 'Starbooks' or digital library which aims to provide science and technology educationa­l and learning resources

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) CAR assistant regional director Nancy Bantog said Starbooks are science and technology material which do not require internet connection developed by the DOST Science and Technology Informatio­n Institute.

The digital library contains livelihood videos, disaster mitigation, educationa­l videos, library materials, interactiv­e math and courseware used by teachers, educationa­l videos, technologi­es, and publicatio­ns.

DOST officials turned over on Tuesday the materials to the municipali­ties of Kabayan, Sablan, Bokod and Kapangan.

The recipients also undergone training to properly utilize and maintain sustainabl­e use of the digital library.

DOST provincial director Dr. Arnold Inumpa said the four municipali­ties of Benguet was chosen as recipient of the program considerin­g not all areas of the province have internet access.

Moreover, micro small medium enterprise, farmers and all informatio­n of technologi­es used in enterprise are found in Starbooks.

For this year, Bantog said they have provided kiosk and solar panels in partnershi­p with Department of Education (Dep-Ed). Among the 42 units deployed this year comprised of 19 solar panels.

Contents of the kiosk are being upgraded to one terabyte minimum capacity of computer and maintenanc­e builders to check the computers.

Gerard Palao-ay said the digital library encourages use of traditiona­l library.

As of January 2018, a total of 118 beneficiar­ies have access to digital libraries in the Cordillera­s with 19 in Apayao, 12 in Abra, 14 in Kalinga, 14 in Mountain Province, 15 in Ifugao and Benguet with 44.
