Landscaping in Baguio schools
A parent from a neighborhood ask why one school in Baguio is requiring a hundredpeso contribution for the school’s landscape. This is in support for the city’s Panagbenga activities. Well I answered positively so long as it is consented by the Parents Teachers Association. But what is it all about in landscaping that deserves involvement of parents and the school in the festival? Does the winning commensurate the effort and money given?
Landscaping is the act of modifying the visible features including the attachments in a given area. It involves the processes of grading or reshaping the land, filling by using rocks and soil and the introduction or maintenance of flora and fauna. Hence, in the judging of landscape, the criteria can be creative design, floral craftsmanship, artistic merit, thematic interpretation, floral and color presentation. The idea of involving city schools is for the learners to be acquainted in landscaping since Baguio is a tourist spot. Thus, whatever knowledge and skills derived in landscaping may be mirrored in the respective learner’s home. Therefore, it is then encouraging that landscaping shall be integrated in subjects such as Science, Technology and Livelihood Education.
Indeed, the committees of the festival must continue to embrace the participation of the school. However, it shall also see to it that those who will judge the output of landscaping have the qualifications such as experience. This means a judge must be a real landscaper.
