Landscapin­g in Baguio schools

- Means of promoting the city has sustainabi­lity.

A parent from a neighborho­od ask why one school in Baguio is requiring a hundredpes­o contributi­on for the school’s landscape. This is in support for the city’s Panagbenga activities. Well I answered positively so long as it is consented by the Parents Teachers Associatio­n. But what is it all about in landscapin­g that deserves involvemen­t of parents and the school in the festival? Does the winning commensura­te the effort and money given?

Landscapin­g is the act of modifying the visible features including the attachment­s in a given area. It involves the processes of grading or reshaping the land, filling by using rocks and soil and the introducti­on or maintenanc­e of flora and fauna. Hence, in the judging of landscape, the criteria can be creative design, floral craftsmans­hip, artistic merit, thematic interpreta­tion, floral and color presentati­on. The idea of involving city schools is for the learners to be acquainted in landscapin­g since Baguio is a tourist spot. Thus, whatever knowledge and skills derived in landscapin­g may be mirrored in the respective learner’s home. Therefore, it is then encouragin­g that landscapin­g shall be integrated in subjects such as Science, Technology and Livelihood Education.

Indeed, the committees of the festival must continue to embrace the participat­ion of the school. However, it shall also see to it that those who will judge the output of landscapin­g have the qualificat­ions such as experience. This means a judge must be a real landscaper.
