Revisiting graduation ceremonies

-

CONSIDERING the current curriculum upgrade of our educational system and the financial or economic conditions of several parents these days, do schools really need to have graduation ceremonies?

Graduation ceremonies are occasions that recognize students' achievements and commend them on the records they've reached - diversely from one another. Likewise, these ceremonies are distinct depending on the type of education, the learner has attended. Graduation ceremonies refers to the school ceremony and “outside the school” ceremony.

School graduation ceremonies in private or public schools are usually financed by the Parents Teachers Association. Hence each graduate has to contribute for the expenses. In public schools, the Deped discourages extravagant spending for graduation ceremonies and Politicians as guest speakers. These is to reduce additional burden from the one year expenses of parents and to isolate the school from the dangers of politicking.

Outside the school ceremonies are encourage as each parent has the decision to plan for the ceremony in accordance to their financial capability.

If one is looking for an “outside the school” graduation ceremony that fits a particular person, there are many options from which to choose. These are the Individual, friends, group and homeschool graduation. The last type of graduation applies to those who attended schooling outside the four corners of the classroom. The Individual Graduation refers to a graduating son or daughter, celebrated at home or restaurant through dinner or party with friends and relatives. If done with two or more graduates who are close friends and who attended schooling together then it is referred to as a Friends Graduation. Parents may also combine forces to create a group graduation ceremony especially if the graduates belong to the same church, indigenous group or from the neighborhood. Catering, a musician, decorations, or a special guest speaker are all handled by a committee and parents may contribute for these expenses. These graduation ceremonies are separate from the formal graduation ceremony done in school. Laurence E. Delos Santos
