Baguio councilor pushing for bike day
CYCLISTS will have their day in the city.
In a move by councilor Elmer Datuin, a day in June will be dedicated to biking enthusiasts in support for the United Nations declaration.
The UN declared June 3 of every year as International World Bicycle Day and Datuin has moved to adopt the day to be Baguio’s bicycle day.
Datuin in a resolution said the move is an acknowledgement to the contribution of cycling to the world’s sustainable development goals.
“The United Nations has declared the 3rd day of June as International World Bicycle Day and invites all member- states and relevant stakeholders to celebrate and promote awareness of the event,” added Datuin.
The UN declaration encourages memberstates to devote particular attention to the bicycle in cross-cutting development strategies and to include the bicycle in international, regional, national and sub-national development policies and programs.
“As a counterpart, the city has to encourage its citizens to use bicycles as means of transportation because aside from health benefits derived from cycling, it is
ecofriendly as it does not emit smoke, and its saves money as it does not use fuel,” Datuin explained.
The event is also aimed to decongest traffic problems in the city even at least for one day and it only needs minimal space for parking.
The June event will also be accompanied by related activities to be supervised by the tourism and special events division of the Office of the City Administrator.
