Carnival extension nixed

- Maria Elena Catajan Sun*Star Reporter

CARNIVAL rides at the park may have seen the last of its days.

The local council snubbed a request for extension by Belezar Ola carnival at the children’s park, shelving the matter for the next session.

During Monday’s regular session, the local council deferred the request for extension by Ola when no one except councilor Benny Bomogao wanted to discuss its merits.

In a losing argument, Bomogao’s reasons to hear out Ola was ignored by colleagues after Vice Mayor Edison Bilog aired his opposition to the request and asked to step down anew as presiding officer.

Bilog intended for

councilor Peter Fianza to preside on the supposed vote the August body would take for the matter but also declined to preside saying he was likewise biased to the cause like the vice mayor.

Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. then moved to defer the matter, shelving the issue until the next session meeting on June 4, Monday.

The carnival’s lease lapses on June 5.

Bilog said the decision of Mayor Mauricio Domogan on the conduct of the carnival must be respected as he admonished last week that he hopes the council will not allow any extensions.

The vice mayor likewise brought up safety standards which were seemingly ignored by Ola despite explanations from Councilor Elmer Datuin, that measure were done to ensure rider safety.

The carnival has been met with opposition since it started almost three months ago with allegations of gambling as well as unsafe rides.

City engineers deemed some rides unsafe and ordered Ola to cease operation to keep the riding public safe from accidents after reports of riders being stuck.

Under the agreement with the city, the carnival will operate for 60 days with a lease price of P500,000 and a 50, 000 bond paid to the city in case of damage to the park.

Bilog said the lease payment as well as the bond given by Ola is not enough for the city as well as the repair of the park which was damaged by the three month operation.
