Talks on for Baguio's ESL

- Maria Elena Catajan Sun*Star Reporter

BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan is set to dialog with Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan for the city’s Engineered Sanitary Landfill.

Domogan said talks with the chief executive will begin in a bid to utilize the land given to the city by Benguet Corporation for its ESL.

“The area is a private property of the Benguet Corporation and is not the property of the municipality of Itogon,” Domogan said.

Domogan said Benguet Corp. recently signed an agreement allowing free use of a 24.1hectare area of the company’s titled property in Antamok, Itogon and whatever fees may be incurred

must be paid to the municipality instead.

The city sees the area as answer the need to have an ESL and stop hauling garbage all together.

Hauling, though expensive, has been identified by the Environment and Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as an acceptable means of disposal for areas which can afford the service and is still without an ESL.

Previously, Benguet Corp pledged 24.11 hectares but had an existing body of water within the 300meter limitation set by the environment department pushing the management of the mining company to expand the area.

During an interagency inspection, 5.11 hectares was added to be able to pass National solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) criteria.
