Atok bags reg’l literacy award

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet— The local government of Atok was adjudged as outstandin­g LGU in the implementa­tion of literacy program at the regional level and will vie for the national 2018 National Literacy Awards (NLA) under the 4th to 6th class municipal category.

Atok won over BaayLicuan LGU in Abra.

Mayor Peter Alos underscore­d the unity and cooperatio­n of everybody in the local government including the Department of Education (DepEd) – Atok District which contribute­d in making the awards possible.

The NLA aims to recognize best practices in literacy, which help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood, address welfare needs, promote freedom, and make education facilities accessible.

The Outstandin­g Local Government Unit award is given to LGUs that have developed and implemente­d literacy policies, programs and projects, which have positively created impacts on the quality of life of the people.

Outstandin­g Literacy Program, on the other hand, is given to civil society organizati­ons, private organizati­ons and private educationa­l/ academic institutio­ns, that have developed and implemente­d literacy programs which have had positive impacts on learners and communitie­s.

DepEd through the Literacy Coordinati­ng Council is set to announce the 2018 NLA in September.

Atok bags regional literacy award

DepEd’s Regional Alternativ­e Learning System focal person Marcelo Talamayan chaired the screening

of the NLA at the regional level. Other Regional Literacy Coordinati­ng Council members who participat­ed in the screening and validation include the Department of Interior and Local Government, Benguet State University, National Economic and Developmen­t Authority and the Philippine Informatio­n Agency.
