Trainor: Matthysse overweight non-issue

-

DEFENDING World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse on Wednesday said he is focusing on training and resting barely two days into his fight against challenger Manny Pacquaio.

In a statement, during a press review held at Le Meridien Hotel in Luala Lumpur, Malaysia, and furnished to Sun.Star Davao, the Argentinian boxer said, "The training is to make sure I’m on weight. I do enough to stay on weight because most of the work was done during camp. It’s about maintaining weight and fine tuning the plan. I’m resting a lot as well and getting great sleep. I’m at peace with my mind right now.”

He then urged fans to watch the "great" fight dubbed as “Fight of Champions.”

Matthysse's trainer Joel Diaz said the champion has been walking around two or three pounds over the weight limit.

Diaz, however said, "The weight has never been an issue. He’s been only a few pounds over for the past few weeks. We train for the fight, not the weight. Where we train [in Indio, California] it’s 116 degrees right now, so Malyasia is cold to us compared to that."

Diaz added that a win over Pacquiao means a lot to him and their camp.

"I don’t think about how many times I’ve gone up against him as a trainer. We are facing a great fighter. A legendary fighter. Much respect to him. But when they get in the ring, it’s going to be a fight,” Diaz said.
