RPMS and PPST: Tools for teachers’ assessment

To enhance the performance of teachers and to develop them professionally, Atok District teachers and school heads attended the training on ResultsBased Performance Management System(RPMS) and the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers(PPST) last July 23-25, 2018 held at Camp 30 National High School, Camp 30 Caliking, Atok, Benguet. The speakers and facilitators were Sir Warden Baltazar, Madam Erlinda Quinoan, Madam Brylen Moresto and Sir Tito Bestre.

Ma’am Quinoan explained that RPMS Tools consist of two different teacher performance assessment instruments, one is to assess Teachers I, II and III and another for Master Teachers I, II, III and IV. On the other hand, Ma’am Moresto discussed that PPST is a public statement of professional accountability that can help teachers to reflect on and to assess their own practices for personal growth and professional development.

Other terms such as KRAs, SAT, COT, MOVs, annotations, and portfolio were mentioned in the training that baffled the mind of teachers. You can heard teachers complains and even negative comments as to the difficulty of preparing MOVs, writing annotations and organizing portfolio. However, with the great and magnificent explanations and ample activities given by the speakers, they were able to comprehend it better and accepted the challenges of these new assessment tools.

Since teachers play a crucial role in improving the quality of life of learners and in nation building, teachers should be empowered and be developed to become a very effective and efficient teachers. With these new assessment tools, it will help teachers to identify their potential and areas for improvement which will also guide the school heads to provide technical assistance.

In conclusion, if these new assessment tools will be given intensive attention and heartily implemented, administration believes that it will upgrade and elevate the performance of teachers which will cater the needs of the kind of learners that we have at present, the 21st century learners.
