BAGUIO City Councilor Lila Fariñas is batting for vertical gardens.

Fariñas wants all barangay halls in the city to install vertical gardens allotting over P1 million for the environmental project.

Under the Fariñas law, all barangay councils shall cause the construction and retrofitting of barangay halls with vertical or roof gardens and locate planting of vegetables and ornamental plants.

Fruit bearing trees will also be to be planted to be utilized for feeding programs of the barangays.

A total of P1,280,000 has been allotted by Fariñas which will be divided into the 128 barangays of the city with each receiving around P10,000 each for the project.

However, the money will only be released to the barangays upon submission of letters of intent, approved plans and specifications from the City Buildings and Architecture Office (CBAO) with its certifi

cation of the project’s completion to assure its smooth execution.

Fariñas cited CBAO to lead in assisting barangays through site inspections, providing the villages a bill of materials, labor cost and other specifications to implement the green project.

The lady councilor cited the Environment Code of the city as a basis for the approval of the law citing Sec 37, Article 8 on Urban Agriculture and Gardening Policy which states “the city shall adapt a program for the promotion of community based organic agriculture / gardening system which also includes among other things the sustainable production of organic fertilizers. The city shall also encourage organic agriculture production in every household to help attain food security.”

Fariñas also stated green architecture and infrastructure is also being encouraged in the code with existing structures to be rehabilitated, renovated and retrofitted to achieve environmental sustainability.
